Easy Steps To Live By: A Hygiene Guide

February 19, 2019

When you’re putting in the daily minutes that your smile requires in terms of dental hygiene, you want to know that you’re doing things correctly! It may start to feel like every second is precious because this part of your care only take about five to six minutes of your day. Sticking to some sort of steps or guidelines must make a big difference when it come so to effectiveness, right? The answer, of course, is yes! Fortunately, it’s also very easy to accomplish when you have the facts you require. Let our Lake Orion, MI team share them with you!

Check Daily That You Have Your Supplies

We remind our patients to check in on a daily basis to ensure they have the supplies they need. While you may think that this is silly, it can be as simple as being certain you have enough toothpaste for a full day of dental hygiene. If you run out, then you may need to miss hygiene (which we never suggest) or end up running out for toothpaste at a very inconvenient time! So, keep an eye on the details, keep a list going, and purchase what you need well in advance.

Wash Your Hands

It’s always a smart idea to wash your hands before you practice dental hygiene. This way, no matter what you came into contact with throughout the day, you’re not accidentally ingesting the flu, common cold, or anything else as you touch your toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss (and, if you share toothpaste with someone, you’re not spreading germs to that individual either).

Set A Timer

Now, we suggest you set a timer for two minutes before you get started with the brushing portion of your dental hygiene. You may be surprised to realize that you are either brushing for too brief a period or too long. When you stick with two minutes, you do a better job at gentle, thorough cleansing, which lets you avoid all sorts of stuff, such as cavities, with ease.

Brush!

Now, start brushing! Remember that you’re going to need about 30 seconds per quadrant of your mouth and try to manage your care according to this thought. You’ll soon get the hang of brushing your entire mouth, all surfaces, within about two minutes and it will feel natural.

Take Your Time When Flossing

Just like with your brushing, you want to enjoy a steady but not rushed pace with your flossing. If you rush it, you may irritate your gum tissue, which can lead to eventual recession. Be gentle and thorough for optimal plaque removal. Remember, you brush twice daily and floss just once!
