Dental Bridges: Wear And Care Questions

March 3, 2016

Do you know all about the way you wear a dental bridge and how to care for this device? Or have you been feeling a little bit bogged down by the details as you try with great determination to choose the best tooth replacement for your needs? If you are of beginning to think a bridge is best for your smile, you may still feel compelled to gain some additional education. For now, learn a bit more about daily wear and care with some advice-filled questions and answers.

Q&A: Wearing And Caring For Your Bridge

Question: How will I wear and care for my dental bridge? Will I just wear it when I need it and then remove it to clean it?

Answer: No. You are thinking of a partial denture, which is a removable prosthetic. A bridge is fixed, which means you will wear it all day long and clean it twice a day (along with the rest of your smile) during your dental hygiene sessions.

Question: So, does that mean I will brush my smile and floss it like I usually do?

Answer: Yes, you may continue your hygiene method as long as it follows optimal practices. This means brushing your teeth with a soft-bristle toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste twice a day and flossing once a day.

Question: What about the small space between the dental bridge and my gum tissue – will this become clean as a result of my usual brushing and flossing?

Answer: It will – you will simply need to make an accommodation by adding this space to your usual flossing. You will gently feed the floss through this space, making sure to clean the area thoroughly. If you find this aspect of care difficult to perform, you may rely on threaders (purchased from the drugstore), which will help you more easily send the floss through.
