Caring for Your Teeth Even While You Sleep

September 7, 2011

Besides using the bathroom or grabbing a cup of coffee, reaching for your toothbrush to get rid of morning breath is probably one of the first things you do when you wake up. This morning brushing session kick-starts your oral hygiene routine, which hopefully includes flossing, using a mouthwash or oral rinse, drinking plenty of water, and limiting your intake of sugary foods and drinks.

We’ve all heard of the things we can do everyday to keep our smile healthy, but what about the things we can do at night to reach the same goal? Bedtime dental hygiene is just as important. Follow these tips to keep your teeth healthy while you get some shut-eye:

  • Brush your teeth right before bed.
  • Brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth.
  • Use toothpaste that contains fluoride.
  • Floss right before bed.
  • Don’t sneak sugar right before bed.
  • Keep a glass of water near your bed.

Staying hydrated, avoiding sugar-loaded foods and drinks, and ridding your mouth of harmful plaque and bacteria right before bed will help to keep your mouth protected and clean while you’re asleep. With a clean mouth, you won’t have to worry about bacteria harming your teeth or gums and forming cavities or gum problems overnight. Sleep soundly knowing that your mouth is protected.
