Tooth-Colored Fillings

Keeping Smiles White & Healthy

If metal dental fillings or tooth decay make you feel embarrassed, ask Dr. Greenfield about composite resins, or tooth-colored fillings. Tinted to blend with your natural enamel, composite resins restore the integrity and beauty of teeth compromised by decay or chips. Composite resin fillings offer several advantages over traditional silver, or amalgam, fillings.

More than Beauty

Unlike metal fillings, which darken with time, composite resins are shaded to the color of your natural teeth, which means only you and your dentist will know you have the fillings. Composites contain no metal and no mercury. They’re the holistic alternative to metal amalgams. Because Dr. Greenfield bonds composite resins to tooth structure, you won’t have to worry about the leakage, shape change, or cracking, as you may with amalgams. Composite fillings complement our conservative philosophy of leaving as much natural tooth structure in place as possible.

What’s the Deal with Mercury?

The American Dental Association and US Food and Drug Association have deemed dental amalgam safe, except for pregnant women, young children, and in people with an allergy to mercury. Amalgams are an inexpensive and durable material, so their use is widespread. However, because some people are allergic to mercury, and mercury in larger doses is a toxic heavy metal, Dr. Greenfield simply avoids amalgams. He sees no need to risk his patient’s health. Do you know if you have a mercury allergy? Most people don’t.

Replacing Amalgam Fillings

If you think your metal fillings may be harmful to your health, or if you’d like to rediscover your all-white smile, Dr. Greenfield can replace your amalgams with composites. He uses a special protocol to safely remove amalgams so that our patients and team aren’t exposed to harmful mercury. While these special precautions may seem above and beyond the norm, Dr. Greenfield is a strong proponent of holistic dentistry and goes to great lengths to provide the same level of treatment for his patients that he’d offer his own family.
