Sealants and Flouride
Kids Have Trouble Cleaning Teeth
Younger children often lack the dexterity, or the attention span, to thoroughly brush and floss their teeth. These limitations, combined with food stuck in the pits and grooves on back teeth, can lead to cavities. Dr. Greenfield often recommends dental sealants to protect hard-to-reach back teeth.
What Are Sealants?
Made from thin, plastic coverings, dental sealants prevent food from lodging in the crevices of back teeth and causing tooth decay. Sealants offer added protection during the cavity-prone years of youth. To apply the sealants, Dr. Greenfield will thoroughly clean the teeth, then brush the clear plastic coating on each tooth.
Why Do Kids Need Fluoride?
Though most people get enough fluoride in their drinking water, Dr. Greenfield often recommends topical fluoride. Applied by the dentist or hygienist, this concentrated dose of fluoride provides another layer of defense for your children’s teeth. Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that attracts other minerals to strengthen teeth against decay. Many babies and children drink non-fluoridated bottled water, which makes the case for fluoride application stronger.
Keeping a Healthy Smile
Even with fluoride and sealants, your children need to brush and floss regularly, under your supervision, and see the dentist every six months for routine checkups.
