Root Canals
Conservative Treatment
Root canal therapy is a conservative procedure that saves a tooth with internal infection. When Dr. Greenfield recommends a root canal, the only other option is extracting the infected tooth. Today, with precision tools and anesthesia options, root canal treatment is comfortable and fast. Simple root canals may be completed in just one visit.
How Infection Happens
When a tooth sustains severe trauma or develops deep decay, the soft inner core that houses the tooth’s nerve becomes compromised. Bacteria invades, and infection sets in. As infection builds inside the tooth, pressure causes an acute toothache. The infection inside the tooth’s core has direct contact with the bloodstream. Untreated, an internally infected tooth will die and infection can spread to other parts of the body.
What to Expect
First of all, know that your comfort and peace of mind will be top priority. Dr. Greenfield will administer anesthesia to keep you comfortable during any dental procedure, including root canal treatment. Once you’re comfortable, Dr. Greenfield will use precision techniques to remove the diseased tissue from your tooth. Then, he’ll disinfect, fill, and seal the tooth. Most often, after a root canal, a crown is placed on the affected tooth. Root canal treatment can leave the mouth feeling a bit sore. Over-the-counter pain medications will relieve mild soreness and swelling.
