Preventive and General Dentistry

Modern dentistry allows people to keep their natural teeth longer now than in any previous generation. Six-month checkups and cleanings, plus following through with your restorative dental treatment plan, will give you and your children the best chance to preserve your natural teeth for life. A healthy, complete smile contributes to overall health, as well as self-confidence and quality of life. Studies show, a diseased mouth can significantly impair overall health and contribute to problems like cardiovascular disease, respiratory problems, and Alzheimer’s.

FAQs

I don’t have any dental problems. Do I really need to schedule a checkup?

Preventive dental care goes a long way toward protecting your smile and oral health. Most healthy adults should plan to visit the dentist twice a year for checkups, and more often if restorations are needed. Routine exams allow us to clean your teeth, examine your whole mouth, and check for problems that you may not see, like gum disease and tooth decay.

Should I be worried if my gums bleed when I brush?

Healthy gums don’t bleed. If you see red while brushing, you may be scrubbing too vigorously, using the wrong toothbrush, or experiencing gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease. Untreated, gum disease can destroy your smile and lead to serious overall health risks. Contact our office right away if your gums are bleeding so that we can determine the cause and address the issue.

I have been experiencing jaw popping. What does that mean?

When your jaw joints become misaligned, they can strain the associated nerves and muscles, causing TMJ dysfunction (TMD). Clicking and popping in your jaw may indicate TMD. Grinding and clenching your teeth, called bruxism, can also make your jaw pop and click. Both TMD and bruxism are treatable conditions. Call us for a consultation.

What are my options to replace missing teeth?

With a complete smile, your confidence and quality of life will improve. After assessing your current dental condition, Dr. Greenfield will recommend the appropriate treatment to replace your missing teeth. He can create attractive-looking replacement teeth with dental bridges, dentures, or implant-supported dentures.

I need a root canal. Can’t you just pull my tooth?

Designed to save an injured tooth, root canal therapy allows Dr. Greenfield to restore your comfort and oral health. Although extraction would solve your immediate problem, missing teeth generate other problems, such as shifting teeth, bite issues, and additional tooth loss. A removed tooth should be replaced, and that means more expense and more dental visits. Ultimately, if the tooth nature gave you can be saved, that's the best way to go.
